Steph Hanson passed away Thursday, June 21, 2018, at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 37. Steph received her Bachelor of Arts from Buena Vista University, Master’s Degree from Graceland University, and was currently working on her Doctorate Degree through North Central University. Steph’s passion for education was exhibited in her dedication to students at Minnesota State University-Mankato, where she was an Assistant Professor of Educational Studies. Her research centered on gender inclusion and non-sexist language in curriculum and the classroom.
As a leader on the LGBTQ+ Committee, she aided in planning the 3rd Annual LGBTQIAA Conference, drafted principles for social justice and LGBTQ+ inclusion in collective bargaining, and was a great source of humor and insight in committee meetings. Steph’s joy was most vivid in her love and pride of her three children, Kyah Marie Brant, Alexandrea "Ally" Nikole Hanson and Khloe Isabel Hanson.
The committee deeply mourns the loss of Steph Hanson, and has forever been changed by her critical work for transgender liberation and affirmation in K-12 education.
